Two architecture students at Iowa State University, Ann Cashman of Waverly and Darian Lu of Shanghai, China, created the plan for a community amphitheater and won an architectural design competition with their 18" by 90" design featuring curved wooden ribs accented with colored glass. When not in use, the structure resembles a sculpture in the park and offers a dramatic view of the river as light reflects off the glass accents. The facility enhances the summer Concerts in Kohlmann series featuring the Greater Waverly Municipal Band, which organized in 1986 and is made up of area high school, college, and adult volunteers. Band members and supporters were a major driving force behind the project. The summer concerts promote the arts and strengthen the community's quality of life by bringing together residents of all ages for evenings of music, entertainment, and refreshments along the Cedar River. The amphitheater also provides a long-needed acoustical background for the municipal band and other music or drama groups performing during Kohlmann Park events, and its central location makes it easily accessible to walkers and cyclists, including those using the nearby Waverly Pedestrian Trail system.
