Cedar Falls Ice House in Cedar Falls, Iowa, is a rare round ice-storage building that reflects the city’s industrial and civic history. After an earlier ice house near William Sturgis’s homestead burned on October 22, 1921, Hugh Smith of the Cedar Falls Ice and Fuel Company built the present hollow clay tile structure, completed in November 1921, and ice harvesting began there on January 10, 1922. The building could store 6,000 to 8,000 tons of ice and served that purpose until 1934. It was later used as a livestock barn, an indoor skating space, and a boat club facility before local preservation efforts saved it and it opened as the Ice House Museum in 1979.
