On the Chesapeake Bay, small skiffs and larger work boats built by Reedville natives George Pope Butler and his son, George M. Butler, served local watermen in fishing, crabbing, oystering, and pleasure. Ranging from 14 to 42 feet in length, these vessels were among hundreds of wooden craft made to order at the Reedville Railway on Main Street. For three generations and over 100 years, Butler boats have been considered among the finest and most desirable on the Chesapeake Bay, and Butler skiffs have been treasured by their owners while Reedville has long been proud of these craftsmen.
