Noah and James Burr, Jr. donated this land for a burial ground known as Birdsey’s Plain and Stepney Cemetery. More than 1,400 men, women and children are interred here, including many of the area’s first settlers. Veterans buried here served in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Civil War, World War I and II, Korea, and Vietnam. The oldest surviving tombstone is that of Nathaniel W. Knapp, dated 1797.
