With a 999-year lease from the Louisiana & Missouri River Railroad, the Chicago & Alton Railroad completed this line in July 1872. At one point, the South Branch ran from Mexico to Cedar City, with passenger service to Fulton beginning in 1872 and ending in the early 1930s. Travelers paid three cents a mile to ride on the C&A in 1904.
