Isle Royale Light, also known as Menagerie Island Light, stands on Menagerie Island in Lake Superior at the mouth of Siskiwit Bay near Isle Royale’s southern shore in northern Michigan. Built in 1875 of red sandstone, it reflects the demands of its exposed setting, where severe storms led to features such as steel shutters on the residence to guard against stormwater damage. As part of Isle Royale’s maritime history, it endures as one of Isle Royale National Park’s historic structures. Its importance as a surviving Great Lakes lighthouse in a remote and harsh environment was recognized when it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
