Tory's Cave, near New Milford in western Connecticut by the Housatonic River, is a marble solutional cave known for both its natural character and a local Revolutionary War tradition. According to that story, a Tory loyal to the British crown hid there during the American Revolution, giving the cave its name. Its main chamber can hold about two dozen people, but the site is closed to protect bat colonies. The cave also has ecological importance as habitat for a blind, shrimp-like amphipod in the genus Stygobromus. In 1996, concern arose that nearby quarry blasting threatened this fragile underground environment.
