Overlook Mountain, near Woodstock, New York, is the southernmost peak of the Catskill Escarpment and a notable scenic summit shaped by glaciation, with distinctive forest habitats and a place in Catskills natural history. Its slopes and summit preserve two well-known landmarks: the ruins of the Overlook Mountain House and a surviving fire tower. Tourism defined much of its past, from early plans for a mountaintop hotel to the opening, repeated fires, rebuilding, and eventual abandonment of the hotel in the twentieth century. The mountain also became home to the Byrdcliffe Colony in 1902 and today brings together the region’s tourism, conservation, and artistic history.
