Savage Mountain, an anticline stretching from Bedford County, Pennsylvania, into western Maryland, forms part of the western edge of the Ridge-and-Valley Appalachians and includes Little Savage Mountain and Big Savage Mountain. It helps define county boundaries and the Eastern Continental Divide, separating Ohio River and Potomac drainage. Long both barrier and passageway, it carried routes from Nemacolin's Path and Braddock Road to the National Road. Later, rail tunnels, a Civilian Conservation Corps road, the Savage River Dam and Reservoir, and Interstate 68 further cut across or followed the ridge. Recent work has included forest studies, tree planting, and proposed energy and water infrastructure projects.
