Chick Springs
History
4
Chick Springs, a mineral spring in present-day Taylors near Greenville, grew from a noted healing-water site into a major South Carolina resort from the mid-19th to early 20th century. Burwell Chick opened the first resort there in 1840, and railroad access in the 1850s brought hundreds of visitors for health cures and recreation. Rebuilt and expanded after fires and ownership changes, the property reached its height under James A. Bull, who added extensive amenities and bottled the spring water. Later uses included a military academy, hotel, sanitarium, and beverage company. Flooding in 1929 badly damaged the site, and only small remnants survived into the 21st century as preservation efforts began.
