Mount Sneffels Wilderness
Nature
Mount Sneffels Wilderness is a protected area in southwest Colorado within the Uncompahgre National Forest, about five miles west of Ouray in the San Juan Mountains. It is named for Mount Sneffels, a prominent fourteener that reaches 14,150 feet. The mountain’s name likely comes from an Americanized form of the Old Norse Snæfell, meaning “snow mountain,” sharing the same linguistic root as Snæfellsnes and Snæfellsjökull in Iceland.
