Tomany Mountain, a 2,589-foot Adirondack peak northwest of Arietta, was once part of New York’s fire observation network. A wooden fire tower built in 1912 was replaced in 1916 by a 50-foot Aermotor LL25 steel tower, an early lighter design that first used a ladder rather than stairs. Wooden steps were added around 1918 or 1919, and a staircase bought in 1916 was finally installed in 1929. As aircraft-based fire detection replaced summit observers, the tower closed after the 1970 fire watching season and was later dismantled. Its summit remains reachable by an unmaintained 1.9-mile trail that follows old telephone poles and trail markers.
