The site of the Morongo Indian Village was the birthplace of John Morongo in 1850; he became an outstanding member of the Morongo clan, for whom Morongo Basin was named, and was later appointed a U.S. Peace Officier with the title of Captain. Hans de Crevecoeur, identified as the first white settler, lived in a tent there, where his son Ben, the first white boy in Morongo Basin, was born in 1876. Mark "Chuck" Warren homesteaded in 1876 and established the first house in the entire area; his son Edwin was born in 1888, and his daughter Lela, the first white girl born in Morongo Basin, was born in 1892.
