During the winter of 1778–79, Major General Isreal Putnam’s division of Continental Army troops maintained three encampments in the Revolutionary War, including one on this site. General Washington positioned his troops in a crescent around the British army in NY City, and the troops camped in Redding were used to protect Long Island Sound, the Hudson Highlands, and especially the military stores at the Army Supply Depot in Danbury. This camp housed Brigadier General Poor’s New Hampshire Brigade and the 2nd Canadian Regiment under Colonel Moses Hazen, and it was built to hold over 1300 troops, while the other two camps held the 1st and 2nd Connecticut Brigades, which contained eight regiments.
