Mount Abraham, a four thousand fifty-foot peak in western Maine, is one of the state’s recognized four-thousand-foot summits and part of the Kennebec River watershed, with its slopes draining into several streams that feed the Carrabassett and Sandy river systems before reaching the Kennebec and Gulf of Maine. The mountain also preserves traces of Maine’s logging era, when timber was sent downslope through ice-covered wooden sluices and carried onward by the Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Railroad. On November 14, 1967, an F-101B Voodoo crashed on the mountain after a midair collision; its two crew members ejected with minor injuries. Today, the summit is commonly reached from the Appalachian Trail by the Mount Abraham Side Trail.
