Sugarloaf Mountain is a prominent peak in Carrabassett Valley in western Maine, ranking as the state’s third highest mountain after Baxter Peak and Hamlin Peak on Mount Katahdin, with Spaulding Mountain to its south and a major ski resort on its north side. Its slopes divide runoff between branches of the Carrabassett watershed, with the northeast and west sides draining to the South Branch of the Carrabassett River and the southeast side reaching the West Branch by way of Rapid Stream. The Appalachian Trail passes within about a mile of the summit, which is reached by a short side trail after the main route was relocated to the mountain’s north side.
