Mount Redington, in western Maine’s Franklin County, is a four-thousand-foot mountain in the high country near Sugarloaf and the Crockers. Its slopes drain into two branches of the Kennebec watershed, and the Appalachian Trail passes nearby without crossing its summit, making it one of the region’s few major peaks without a maintained trail to the top. In the mid-2000s, the mountain became central to a major land-use dispute when plans for a wind farm on Redington and Black Nubble were rejected. Regulators found Redington’s summit too ecologically sensitive because of rare wildlife habitat and the project’s visibility from the Appalachian Trail.
