The High Peaks is a mountainous region in western Maine entirely within Franklin County, bounded roughly by State Route 4, Routes 16 and 27, and Route 142. It is one of Maine’s most concentrated areas of high terrain, containing eight of the state’s fourteen 4,000-foot summits and about 21,000 contiguous acres above 2,700 feet. That expanse of elevated land is especially notable in Maine, exceeding even Baxter State Park in contiguous acreage above that elevation by roughly 15 percent. The Appalachian Trail crosses the region for 32.2 miles and climbs about 10,000 feet, underscoring the area’s sustained elevation, long ridgelines, and major ascents.
