Silverwood Wildlife Sanctuary in Lakeside, northeast of San Diego, was established in 1965 to protect coastal chaparral and riparian woodland while serving education and wildlife movement. Beginning with an 85-acre donation from Harry Woodward, it expanded to 757 acres by 2013. The preserve holds evidence of thousands of years of Kumeyaay presence and remains a relatively pristine chaparral landscape with seasonal streams, diverse plant life, and many mammals, birds, and reptiles, including threatened and rare species. After the Cedar Fire of 2003 completely burned the sanctuary, habitats regenerated quickly, facilities were rebuilt, and public education continued through trails, hikes, and school programs.
