Chaos Canyon
Tinmouth, Vermont
Nature
Chaos Canyon is a wooded cleft within a giant quartzite rockslide in the White Rocks National Recreation Area of southcentral Vermont, below White Rocks Peak in the Green Mountains. Formed more than 10,000 years ago when intense frost action caused the mountain’s west slope to collapse, it remains a striking visible remnant of that ancient event. The canyon’s importance is both scenic and geological, because it preserves clear evidence of a massive prehistoric rockslide whose break in the stone can still be seen in the landscape.
