Governor Wentworth Historic Site in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, preserves ninety-six acres of undeveloped historic landscape where John Wentworth, New Hampshire’s second Royal Governor, established a large country estate shortly before the American Revolution. The mansion burned in 1820, leaving only stone remains and the broader landscape to evoke the colonial era and the last years of royal government in the state. New Hampshire acquired the property in 1934 and chose to preserve it as a historic site rather than rebuild it. Its addition to the New Hampshire State Register of Historic Places in 2007 affirmed both its association with Wentworth and its importance to the state’s pre-Revolutionary history.
