Washakie Needles is the highest peak in Wyoming’s Washakie Range, rising in the Washakie Wilderness of Shoshone National Forest within the southern Absaroka Range. Its summit is distinguished by needle-like dacite pillars formed in the Absaroka volcanic field. Dated to about 38.8 million years ago, these rocks are the youngest volcanic rocks associated with the Absarokas. Located just south of Dome Mountain, the range’s second-highest summit, Washakie Needles stands out for its elevation, remote wilderness setting, and dramatic volcanic summit, making it one of the defining peaks of northwestern Wyoming.
