Mount Electra, a 2,260-foot Adirondack peak in New York’s Town of Webb, was once called Rock Lake Mountain. Its most notable historical role began around 1920, when the Webb Estate built a 60-foot Aermotor LS40 steel fire lookout tower on the summit. Though privately owned, the tower cooperated with the Conservation Commission during times of high fire danger, with the State helping pay the observer and the Webb family managing hiring. In the late 1970s, the mountain and tower entered the New York State Forest Preserve as part of the Five Ponds Wilderness Area. Because the tower no longer fit wilderness rules, it was dismantled in 1989 but left on the summit as a remnant of the region’s fire-observation era.
