Kakeout Mountain, the highest point in Kinnelon, New Jersey, has long been valued for its sweeping eastern view, including the Hudson River. Its name derives from the Dutch kijkuit, or “lookout,” and an older local spelling was later replaced because it had become controversial. During the American Revolutionary War, George Washington’s troops used the mountain as a strategic lookout between Ringwood Manor and Morristown. A reported gold discovery followed in 1897, and in the twentieth century the mountain became tied to local water infrastructure through a reservoir, dam, overflow pool, wartime guarding, and later added storage capacity. Fires, including two in 1957, also marked its history.
