During the French and Indian War, two Rogers' Rangers were buried here after a wolf attack that followed a moose hunt. In Lieutenant George Campbell's diary, Sergeant Lewis said his party had shot a moose near a river, but it disappeared into the woods and they were too weak to track it except for three rangers. Those three came upon the moose while it was being attacked by wolves, and the wolves turned on them, killing one ranger and mortally wounding the other two, who crawled back to Lewis and died there.
