Burke Mountain rises in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom, mostly in the towns of Burke and Kirby, with its southeastern side extending into Essex County. Set among forested uplands near Umpire and Kirby mountains, it lies within the Passumpsic River watershed, with runoff from its slopes reaching the river by several brooks. Part of Darling State Forest Park of Victory State Forest, Burke Mountain became best known for the ski area developed on its northwest slopes beginning in the 1940s. With heavy snowfall, extensive trails and lifts, and major biking and winter trail connections, it has become an important year-round recreation destination. Ownership of the ski area changed in 2012 and again was announced in 2025.
