Eagle Island Light, on Eagle Island in Penobscot Bay in south-central Maine, has long served one of the bay’s island navigation stations in a region dependent on small lights and fog signals. Its first tower was lit in 1838 but was so physically flawed that it was torn down and replaced in 1858. Several families operated the station over the next century until automation in 1959 ended resident keepers. In 1964 the keeper’s house was demolished and the bell removed despite local protest; after falling into the bay, the bell was later recovered by a lobsterman. A nonprofit now owns and has restored the light and bell tower, though tree growth threatens its historic visibility.
