Berry Botanic Garden in southwest Portland grew from Rae Selling Berry’s personal plant collection on a hillside property she established in 1938. Known for exceptional alpines, primulas, rhododendrons, lilies, and Pacific Northwest native plants, it combined horticultural display with significant conservation work. Berry expanded the collection through overseas seed sources and her own field collecting, and the garden developed major features including a large public rock garden. After her death, a nonprofit turned the estate into a public garden. Its scientific legacy deepened with a pioneering seed bank for rare and endangered Pacific Northwest plants, which continued at Portland State University after the garden closed and the property was sold.
