Battle Ax
Nature
Battle Ax is a shield volcano in Oregon’s West Cascade Range, formed mostly of andesite and prominent enough to be shown as a mountain. Its summit is reached by the Battle Ax Mountain Trail and sits at the junction of several boundaries, dividing Mount Hood National Forest from Willamette National Forest and Opal Creek Wilderness from Bull of the Woods Wilderness. The mountain’s unusual name is said to have come from the brand of chewing tobacco preferred by a local logger.
