St. Thomas Episcopal Church was constructed in 1847 at a cost of $1,500 and was officially incorporated in May 1848, though parish records date back to 1832. Early benefactors included many well-known local families, among them the Rutherford, Dekay, Price, Baird, Allen, and McCamley families. It is the oldest extant church building in Vernon Township and a landmark example of mid-19th-century Carpenter Gothic architecture. The church closed in 1971, served as the home of the Vernon Township Historical Society from 1977 to 1981, reopened for worship in 1981, and was rededicated in March 1983.
