Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge protects a wetland landscape stretching nine miles along the Wallkill River near the New York–New Jersey border. Established in 1990, it encompasses more than 5,100 acres, mostly in Sussex County, New Jersey, with the remainder in Orange County, New York. Its primary purpose is wetland conservation, especially for migratory birds and the endangered bog turtle. Waterfowl impoundments in its northern black dirt wetlands support migrating ducks, shorebirds, and raptors. Alongside conservation, the refuge allows compatible low-impact recreation, including hiking, fishing, canoeing, hunting, and wildlife viewing, and it also includes the Shawangunk Grasslands refuge as a subunit.
