The Hall of the Mountain King
Industry
2
Before the turn of the century, this area was a center of industrial activity focused on excavating sand for building purposes and for glassware. For many years, the sand was carted to Drehersville by way of the rough route over the mountain. Later, perhaps about 1890, the area came into the hands of the J.D. Stone Company, which built a track on the mountain’s extremely steep north slope called the “Slide.” Cars were loaded in the “Hall,” pushed through the cut to a level area at the head of the tracks where a huge drum with steel cables stood, and a blacksmith shop also stood nearby.
