Azure Mountain, a 2,323-foot peak in Adirondack Park near Blue Mountain Road in Waverly, is closely identified with its fire observation station. A wooden lookout built on the summit in 1914 was replaced in 1918 by a 35-foot Aermotor LS40 steel tower, which remained in service through the 1979 fire season, reflecting the importance of staffed mountaintop lookouts in forest fire detection. Recognized for that history, the station was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. Local supporters then organized restoration efforts, and after work from 2002 to 2003 the tower reopened in 2003. Today the mountain remains both a popular destination and a preserved part of New York fire lookout history.
