The Saint Regis Canoe Area is a protected wilderness in New York’s Adirondack Park between Tupper Lake and Paul Smiths. Encompassing 18,400 acres, it is the largest wilderness canoe area in the Northeastern United States and the only part of New York specifically designated for canoeing. Its network of about 50 ponds, lakes, and carry trails reflects the Adirondack tradition of paddling and portaging, with only two lakes accessible without a carry. Including the headwaters of the West and Middle Branch of the Saint Regis River and the Saranac River, it is also known for primitive canoe camping and quiet, non-motorized backcountry travel.
