Spitfire Lake is a 250-acre lake in northern New York’s Adirondacks, part of the St. Regis River system and connected with Upper and Lower St. Regis Lake. Long associated with classic regional canoe routes, it also became, in the late 19th century, part of one of the Adirondacks’ most fashionable summer districts. Paul Smith’s Hotel drew wealthy visitors to these waters, and the shoreline developed large summer cottages and Adirondack Great Camps linked with prominent families including Frederick W. Vanderbilt, Anson Phelps Stokes, and Whitelaw Reid. Its importance rests in this blend of wilderness travel, elite seasonal retreat, and distinctive camp architecture.
