Saint Regis Mountain, a 2,838-foot peak in Santa Clara, New York, rises at the center of the Saint Regis Canoe Area in Adirondack Park and is a popular hiking destination despite its modest height. A gradual 3.3-mile climb from Keese Mills Road leads to an unusually open summit, created in 1876 when a surveying party led by Verplanck Colvin accidentally burned the top bare. That exposed summit gives broad views over about thirty lakes, including the Upper and Lower Saranac and Saint Regis lakes, with the Adirondack High Peaks beyond. Its summit fire tower, restored in 2016, ties the mountain to the region’s long tradition of forest fire observation.
