The Man family relied primarily on something other than crop farming for income, using their property’s gardens, small orchards, and animals mostly for their own needs. An agricultural census in 1880 recorded that the Mans owned 186 acres of land and kept nine horses, four milk cows, four pigs, 11 chickens, and 20 peach trees. In the previous year, the family produced 150 lbs. of butter, collected 144 eggs, earned $20 from selling peaches, and earned $15 from selling lumber from their trees. Ralph S. Man built the barn around 1865, about the same time as the original log house, with a foundation of stacked field stones. Its timber frame used vertical beams notched with mortise and tenon pockets, a construction style popular at the time. Over the years, the barn changed in several notable ways: a roof overhang on the south side was added around 1930, the original shake-shingle roof was likely replaced over time, the current metal roof was added more recently, and some wall planks and support logs were replaced. Even so, many original square nails and other nineteenth-century features remain visible, and the barn is largely unchanged from its original construction.
