During World War I and World War II, people from the Smithfield area served their country, and those who made the supreme sacrifice were remembered by name: Howard E. Boord, Judson Grimm, and Charles W. Smith in World War I, and Dalton W. Beatty, Howard B. Beatty, Rasler E. Chisnel, Wilson P. Clemmer, Andy Debevic, Donald A. Dennis, Robert L. Fisher, Robert F. Gush, Mike Hegedus, John L. Monteith, Earl L. Moody, Donald Moore, Ewing E. Nedrow, Emil E. Ondrejko, George Seimon, Frank Stager, and Franklin T. Strawn in World War II. The people of the Smithfield area also paid tribute to the men and women of the Armed Forces who served honorably in Korea and in southeast Asia during the Vietnam Conflict. E. L. Morgan, W.J. Burchinal, S.G. Moser, H.M. Hoone, and W.L. Watson served on the building committee.
