Lock and Dam No. 5 was designed and constructed under the direction of the Corps of Engineers, United States Army, from 1933 to 1935. The contractor for the lock was Edward E. Gillen Co., the contractor for the dam was Merritt-Chapman & Whitney Corp., and the contractor for the electrical work was Harmon Electric Co.
