Binn Chaonaigh
Faith
Binn Chaonaigh is a 633-metre peak in Connemara’s Maumturk Mountains, the fourth-highest summit in the range, rising above the pass of Máméan and linked by ridges to neighboring peaks. Its significance reaches beyond topography because Máméan below it is an old pilgrimage landscape associated with Saint Patrick since the 5th century and with earlier Lughnasadh observances. The site includes a holy well, Saint Patrick’s Bed on the mountain, a penal-era Mass Rock, a chapel built in the 1980s, and a Saint Patrick statue added in 1986. After decline in the 19th and mid-20th centuries, pilgrimage was revived in 1979, and the mountain is also valued for hillwalking and the Maamturks Challenge.
