Lissoughter
Nature
Lissoughter, or Lissoughter Hill, is a distinct mountain in Connemara, County Galway, at the southern entrance to the Inagh Valley between the Twelve Bens and the Maumturks. Its Irish name, Cnoc Lios Uachtair, preserves an older Gaelic place-name tradition meaning “hill of the upper ring-fort.” Though only 401 metres high, its strong prominence makes it stand out clearly in the landscape and gives broad views across Connemara’s two best-known mountain ranges and the southern boglands. Within Connemara National Park, it is also notable for the Lissoughter-Derryclare quarry on its southern slopes, a source of green Connemara marble.
