Wasatch National Forest occupies a broad mountain region in northern Utah and southwestern Wyoming east of Salt Lake City and Provo. Established as the Wasatch Forest Reserve on August 16, 1906, with 86,440 acres, it became Wasatch National Forest on March 4, 1907, and expanded on July 1, 1908, with the addition of Grantsville and Salt Lake national forests, reflecting the early growth of the federal forest system. Since 1973 it has been administered with Cache National Forest, and its lands include five designated wilderness areas, underscoring its place within a larger protected mountain landscape.
