David Bailey Freeman, known to his fellow Confederates as Little Dave, enlisted in the 6th Georgia Cavalry, Company D, on May 16, 1862, just two weeks after his eleventh birthday, after accompanying his older brother Madison Montgomery Freeman to camp as his aide with their mother's consent. The smallest soldier in his unit, riding a spotted pony, he drew notice whenever the unit entered town and later recalled the attention his diminutive size brought him. During his two-year enlistment, he witnessed the bloody fighting at Chickamauga and in the last months of the war fought against Sherman's Campaign for Atlanta, seeing action at Resaca, Cassville, and Kennesaw Mountain with General Joseph E. Johnston. Identified as the youngest Confederate soldier and the youngest soldier of both armies to serve in the American Civil War, he later became a newspaper publisher, editor, and writer, served as mayor of Calhoun, Georgia, Cedartown, Georgia, and Cartersville, Georgia, and co-authored General Nathan Bedford Forrest - The Wizard of the Saddle. Late on the evening of June 18, 1929, at age 77, he died of a heart attack in his apartment in Atlanta, Georgia, after having been ill for several days and returning ten days earlier from a Confederate Veterans Reunion in North Carolina, and he is buried in Cartersville's Oak Hill Cemetery.
