Salisbury Beach State Reservation on the Atlantic coast in Salisbury, Massachusetts, is one of the state’s busiest parks, with ocean beach, Merrimack River shoreline, camping, boating, fishing, picnicking, and other outdoor activities. Its history reflects both military use and a constantly changing coast. A Civil War fort once stood here before erosion claimed it, and during World War II the area again served military purposes with a reservation and gun battery. Acquired for park use in 1931 and improved in the 1930s, it remains shaped by shoreline management, while harbor seals and a variety of coastal birds make it an important wildlife-viewing area as well.
