Science & Tech
Newburyport Harbor Light, also known as Plum Island Light, is a historic lighthouse on Northern Boulevard in Newburyport, Massachusetts, built in 1788 to serve the harbor. Long one of the city’s best-known maritime landmarks, it retains its original 4th order Fresnel lens, still in operation. This makes it one of only five original glass Fresnel lenses still working in Massachusetts, a rare survival of 19th-century lighthouse technology. The City of Newburyport now owns the light and leases it to the Friends of Plum Island Light. Its significance was formally recognized with its listing on the National Register of Historic Places on June 15, 1987.
