Rupert Covered Bridge No. 56, built in 1847 by Jesse M. Beard, crosses Fishing Creek in Montour Township near Rupert in Columbia County, Pennsylvania, and remains open to regular traffic. It is the oldest surviving covered bridge in the county and, at about 185 feet long with a 164-foot covered length, also the county’s longest. The three-span Burr arch bridge has a single-lane wooden roadway that is wider than any other covered bridge in Columbia County. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, it continued serving local travel after a 2001 renovation improved its condition.
