Durgin Bridge, a nineteenth-century covered bridge in eastern Sandwich, New Hampshire, carries Durgin Bridge Road over the Cold River near Tamworth. Built in 1869 at a main river crossing near James Durgin’s mill, it replaced earlier bridges destroyed by floods in 1844, 1855, and 1869. Builder Jacob Berry, who had worked with Peter Paddleford, used a rare Paddleford truss while improving the crossing by removing the central pier and raising the structure ten feet. Now the only surviving nineteenth-century covered bridge in Sandwich, it remains a working crossing and a reminder of the region’s earlier bridge-building traditions.
