Lizard Head Wilderness is a protected mountain area in southwest Colorado, about 10 miles southwest of Telluride, jointly managed by the Uncompahgre and San Juan National Forests. Spanning 41,309 acres, it is known for rugged terrain and relatively light visitation. It takes its name from Lizard Head, a striking 13,113-foot volcanic spire whose unstable, crumbling rock and steep cliffs make summit attempts appropriate only for experienced mountaineers. The wilderness also contains El Diente Peak, Wilson Peak, and Mount Wilson, includes the headwaters of the west fork of the Dolores River, and has about 37 miles of generally strenuous trails suited to advanced backpackers.
