El Diente Peak is a 14,165-foot summit in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, north by east of Rico in the Lizard Head Wilderness. Its Spanish name, meaning “The Tooth,” reflects its sharp profile. Though its 239 feet of topographic prominence falls short of a common standard for a separate peak, it is widely recognized as a true Colorado fourteener because the rugged three-quarter-mile ridge connecting it to nearby Mount Wilson is itself a demanding climb. El Diente is regarded as one of Colorado’s more dramatic and difficult fourteeners, with loose rock, unstable talus, serious route-finding, and a history of accidents and rescues, including a fatal rock slide in 2010.
