Mount Wilson, a 14,254-foot summit in southwestern Colorado, is the highest peak in the San Miguel Mountains and one of the state’s fourteeners. Named for Hayden Survey topographer A. D. Wilson, who joined the first ascent on September 13, 1874, it was once also called Glacier Mountain before its present name was adopted in 1906. Known as one of Colorado’s more demanding high peaks, it features difficult climbing routes, permanent snowfields, and a rugged traverse to El Diente Peak. The mountain is also notable for surviving glaciers, evidence of larger Pleistocene ice, nearby early-1880s silver mining, and serious accidents caused by steep terrain and volatile weather.
